Relativistic corrections to electrical first-order properties using direct perturbation theory.

2008

Direct perturbation theory (DPT) is applied to compute relativistic corrections to electrical properties such as dipole moment, quadrupole moment, and electric-field gradient. The corrections are obtained as second derivatives of the energy and are given via method-independent expressions that involve the first derivative of the density matrix with respect to the relativistic perturbation as well as property integrals with additional momentum operators. Computational results obtained using Hartree-Fock (HF), second-order Moller-Plesset (MP2) perturbation theory, and the coupled-cluster singles and doubles approach augmented by a perturbative treatment of triple excitations are presented for…

Experimental constraints on the coupling of the Higgs boson to electrons

2015

In the standard model (SM), the coupling of the Higgs boson to electrons is real and very small, proportional to the electron mass. New physics could significantly modify both real and imaginary parts of this coupling. We discuss experiments which are sensitive to the Higgs-electron coupling and derive the current bounds on new physics contributing to this coupling. The strongest constraint follows from the ACME bound on the electron electric dipole moment (EDM). We calculate the full analytic two-loop result for the electron EDM and show that it bounds the imaginary part of the Higgs-electron coupling to be less than 1.7 x 10^-2 times the SM electron Yukawa coupling. Deviations of the real…

Comment on "Axion induced oscillating electric dipole moments"

2017

In the recent work [Phys. Rev. D 91, 111702(R) (2015)], C. Hill concludes that the axion electromagnetic anomaly induces an oscillating electron electric dipole moment of frequency $m_a$ and strength $\sim 10^{-32}~e$ cm, in the limit $v/c \to 0$ for the axion field. Here, we demonstrate that a proper treatment of this problem in the lowest order yields $\textit{no}$ electric dipole moment of the electron in the same limit. Instead, oscillating electric dipole moments of atoms and molecules are produced by different mechanisms.

Electric-Field-Induced Symmetry Breaking of Angular Momentum Distribution in Atoms

2006

We report the experimental observation of alignment to orientation conversion in the 7D_3/2 and 9D_3/2 states of Cs in the presence of an external dc electric field, and without the influence of magnetic fields or atomic collisions. Initial alignment of angular momentum states was created by two-step excitation with linearly polarized laser radiation. The appearance of transverse orientation of angular momentum was confirmed by the observation of circularly polarized light. We present experimentally measured signals and compare them with the results of a detailed theoretical model based on the optical Bloch equations.

Electronic structure of the ytterbium monohydroxide molecule to search for axionlike particles

2021

Recently, the YbOH molecule has been suggested as a candidate to search for the electron electric dipole moment (eEDM), which violates spatial parity ($P$) and time-reversal ($T$) symmetries [I. Kozyryev and N. R. Hutzler, Phys. Rev. Lett. 119, 133002 (2017)]. In the present paper, we show that the same system can be used to measure coupling constants of the interaction of electrons and nucleus mediated by axionlike particles. The electron-nucleus interaction produced by the axion exchange can contribute to a $T,P$-violating EDM of the whole molecular system. We express the corresponding $T,P$-violating energy shift produced by this effect in terms of the axion mass and product of the axion…

Electric-field-induced symmetry breaking of angular momentum distribution in atoms

2007

We report the observation of alignment to orientation conversion in the 7,9 D3/2states of Cs in the presence of an electric field without the influence of magnetic fields or collisions. Initial alignment of angular momentum was created by two-step excitation with linearly polarized light. The appearance of transverse orientation was confirmed by the observation of circularly polarized fluorescence. We present measured signals and compare them with the results of a theoretical model based on the optical Bloch equations. The effect is odd under time reversal and should be taken into account in searches for an electron electric dipole moment.

Electric dipole moments from flavoredCPviolation in supersymmetry

2008

The so-called supersymmetric flavor and $CP$ problems are deeply related to the origin of flavor and hence to the origin of the standard model Yukawa couplings themselves. We show that realistic $SU(3)$ flavor symmetries with spontaneous $CP$ violation reproducing correctly the standard model Yukawa matrices can simultaneously solve both problems without ad hoc modifications of the supersymmetric model. We analyze the leptonic electric dipole moments and lepton flavor violation processes in these models. We show that the electron electric dipole moment and the decay $\ensuremath{\mu}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}e\ensuremath{\gamma}$ are naturally within reach of the proposed experiments if the s…

Effects of $CP$-violating internucleon interactions in paramagnetic molecules

2020

We demonstrate that electron electric dipole moment experiments with molecules in paramagnetic state are sensitive to $P,T$-violating nuclear forces and other $CP$-violating parameters in the hadronic sector. These experiments, in particular, measure the coupling constant $C_{SP}$ of the $CP$-odd contact semileptonic interaction. We establish relations between $C_{SP}$ and different $CP$-violating hadronic parameters including strength constants of the $CP$-odd nuclear potentials, $CP$-odd pion-nucleon interactions, quark-chromo EDM and QCD vacuum angle. These relations allow us to find limits on various $CP$-odd hadronic parameters.
